TomTom HD Traffic uses a revolutionary new source of traffic information: the traffic flow of up to 80 million anonymous mobile phone users on the road and 1 million connected TomTom devices. From this anonymous data, TomTom knows exactly where, in which direction and at what speed all these mobile phone users are traveling throughout the road network. This real-time data is combined with other existing quality traffic information sources, resulting in the most complete and reliable traffic information.
So what this means in essence is, TomTom HD Traffic looks at where these anonymous mobile phone users are, overlaps a map and sees straight away where all the mobile phones have stopped or slowed down - it can safely be assumed therefore that there is traffic on this road - It then lets you know that there is traffic on your route and provides an alternative route to get you to your destination quicker and stress free!
